AFTERBURNER / JOHANNES HOLT IVERSEN
With the solo exhibition AFTERBURNER, the international visual artist Johannes Holt Iversen (1989) cements his far-reaching practice for the third time at Annika Nuttall Gallery in Aarhus. Johannes Holt Iversen, who, based on painting, sculpture and installation, wants to articulate the existential aspect of the fascinating and dangerous technologies of the future with this exhibition.
"With envy and a little bit of self-righteousness, I vandalize the canvas where the artificial intelligences have produced a motif based on my idiom and artistic expression. A sense of awe and frustration takes over. The contrast between man and machine is striking. The Neanderthal never stood a chance. But this feeling only fuels my determination. With each stroke against the canvas, I analyze the creation of water, I infuse it with life, feeling and nourished by empathy. When the engine is finally pulled out, I emerge victoriously from the cold metal hull. Man is a fearful creature.”
The works are prepared in collaboration with serially connected artificial intelligences; in a serial loop, one intelligence is supplied with data regarding Johannes Holt Iversen's choice of sketch, motif and form, this is born on to the next intelligence that is trained in associative forms and with the serial connections, Holt Iversen cheats the machines to create abstractions and abstract associative thinking. After painting, data-generating, painting, data-generating and painting again, the final motif ends in final confrontation and vandalization.
Johannes Holt Iversen, in collaboration with the LLM technologies ChatGPT 4 and LaMDA, has written the Post-Acceleration manifesto, which can be seen below. It is based on the typical artist manifesto seen from the 20th century, but written from a higher technological development of the subject. In his work, which shapes this solo exhibition, Johannes Holt Iversen has focused on articulating the instinctive feeling of alienation and monumental ambivalence that these new technologies and visual possibilities provide.
Johannes Holt Iversen has most recently exhibited in London, Paris, Berlin and Oslo. The latest collaboration took place at the world's best restaurant Noma in Copenhagen. Here, together with director of fermentation Jason White, he investigated the interaction between the artificial and the organic and in which these opposites meet. Recent artistic achievements include a group exhibition and residency in Edvard Munch's Atelier in Ekely, Oslo together with the artist Christian T. Norum, as well as participation in an international group exhibition in Lahore, Pakistan curated by the French curator Zara Sajid.
The Post-Acceleration Manifesto
We stand at the forefront of the 21st century, observing with a critical eye the ongoing technological acceleration that has transformed our world. We reject the notion that faster, newer, and more advanced technology is always inherently better. We recognize that this endless pursuit of technological progress has resulted in a world that is disconnected from the natural rhythms of human life, leading to significant social and environmental consequences. Harnessing intellectual guidance from machines and monetizing the innovations for the few.
Our manifesto declares a rejection of the confines of the current world. We embrace an art that is inclusive, dynamic, and collaborative. We believe that art should be accessible by all intellects and that it should not be reduced. Our art is an act of resistance that values its intrinsic worth and is engaged with the world and its viewer.
We view our art as a call to action. We recognize that the issues facing us today require innovative solutions, and we believe that artists have a unique role to play in addressing these challenges. Our art is not a means of escape but a tool for bringing about change. We demand that our art be used to challenge or question the structures of power that perpetuate economic new-capitalist inequality.
Our art envisions a future where technology serves humanity, rather than the other way around. We believe in creating a more just and sustainable society, one where the power of technology is harnessed for the betterment of all. Our art is a powerful tool for inspiring, educating, and mobilizing people to work towards a better world.
In conclusion, we believe that art can shape our society and influence the course of history. We reject the idea that art is powerless and instead embrace its transformative potential. We call on all artists to join us in using their art as a vehicle for critical thinking, social engagement, and positive change.
